South Venice is separated from the gulf of Mexico by a narrow strip of Lemon bay. Prior to the construction of the inter-coastal waterway in the 1960's, the residents of South Venice had beach access via a wooded bridge that connected the South Venice mainland to the northern portion of Manasota Key. When the Army Corp of Engineers removed the bridge the residents fought to have their beach access restored. Now a ferry service takes South Venice residents back an forth to the beach. The ferry runs nearly everyday though one day a week is reserved for maintenance. The trip is a short one lasting only about 5 minutes. The beach is pristine and extremely private.
